Looking Back:

In 1973, a group of enthusiastic people with various occupations and backgrounds united to promote their interest in collecting and restoring antique agricultural equipment. This group would be known as the Tuckahoe Steam and Gas Association. There were 79 charter members, eight of them youth members. There are now more than 250 active members and 400 associate members.

The Association started with a small piece of ground on Route 50 north of Easton. Over the years, parcels have been added until now the grounds cover almost 50 acres occupied by 20 buildings. Many of the buildings house machinery and equipment restored to museum condition.

Tuckahoe is a non-profit, all volunteer organization with thousands of hours of labor donated each year in the administration of the Association, to clear and maintain the grounds, to build and maintain the buildings, and to collect and restore the old equipment and display it so that future generations will be able to learn about their proud heritage.

From the founders to the present, the Association's goal is to not only display the equipment, but to operate it during shows and reunions. This not only keeps the equipment from getting lost, it motivates the younger generation to participate, so they can learn the skills and crafts of their forefathers. Farming techniques and skills that once supported the rural communities will be handed down to future generations.

Collecting, restoring, displaying, and operating this equipment pays tribute to our forefathers, especially those who took part in the free enterprise system. Through their ingenuity, they developed the machinery that made the American farmer and industry more productive and safer, and reduced the hard labor required to produce the food and goods needed by the growing population.

Over the years, the Association has sponsored many family-oriented events at the show grounds to finance the needs of the growing organization. The annual summer shows, fall shows, tractor pulls, music festivals, and rodeos, and events sponsored by community and other organizations have been held on the grounds.

Over twenty-five years of friendships, hard work, and community support are surely in evidence in this unique place called Tuckahoe Steam and Gas Association. All of those involved, from the founders to the present members are proud of their contribution to the Eastern Shore community and the community of similar organizations dedicated to the preservation of our past.

Looking Forward:

Several exciting developments are underway at TSGA.

First is the acquisition of an additional ~20 acres adjoining the north end of our current property. This addition will give us more parking (needed for the annual show and other major events), as well as access to a side road off of Route 50 which would enable us to move our main vehicle entrance.

For several years, volunteers from Tuckahoe and the Chesapeake Area Metalworking Society have been restoring old machine tools in a corner of the Rural Life Museum. The collection of machine tools will soon have a home of its own. We have begun construction of the new Machine Shop building (spring 2007) and hope to have the building under roof in time for the 2007 annual show.

In September 2006 we hosted our first gathering of the Mid-Atlantic Blacksmiths Association, concurrent with the Chesapeake Area Metalworking Society (CAMS) and Tuckahoe machinists yard sale. We hope to make these an annual event.

Directions

Tuckahoe Steam & Gas Association is located on Maryland's Eastern Shore, approximately 5 miles north of Easton, MD on US Route 50 between mileposts 58 and 59. We are approximately 23 miles from the Bay Bridge.

From the northeast:

Coming from Delaware or the Philadelphia area, take I95 south to Delaware Rte 7 / Rte 1 south. Take 896 north (actually you will be going west) to Rt 301 South. Exit on MD 213 south to US 50 South.

From Baltimore:

Take the Baltimore beltway (I695) to I97 south. Exit onto Rte 50 east.

From Washington and points west:

Take the Washington beltway (I495) to US Rte 50 east.
